Figures published at the weekend have revealed that children in Leeds as young as 11 have been charged within the last two years for a number of serious crimes, including arson, theft, fraud and possession of weapons.
According to the latest figures, in excess of 1,500 children aged under 16 have been charged by police over the last two years; with children under 12 being accused of offences including fraud; whilst over 250 charges were brought against children for theft.
It has also been revealed that roughly 280 children have been charged for offences relating to violence against other people; 200 for burglary and roughly 125 for robbery.
Following the latest figures, the crime tsar for West Yorkshire has suggested that children should only be charged for offences as a last resort.
