Recently published figures, compiled by the Crown Prosecution Service have revealed that despite their being an estimated 9,000 rapes throughout Yorkshire in the last year, there have only been just over 200 convictions.
The latest figures have suggested that the four police forces within the county are referring fewer cases for potential charging; whilst there are also disparities between how forces throughout Yorkshire approach and investigate cases.
As a result of the disparities, it has been suggested that cases referred to prosecutors from South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire police are more than twice as likely to result in a charge, than those cases referred from North Yorkshire police.
One reason cited for the low conviction rate, as well as the disparities, is police budget cuts threatening resources for rape investigations; although a Superintendent from West Yorkshire police has stated that there’s “no intention to reduce the level of resources deployed in this very important area.”
