Shoplifting Figures Rise in Leeds

  • Posted

Figures have recently suggested that on average crime within Leeds has experienced a decline over the last 12 months; however, the figures have also revealed that one area of crime which has experienced a rise is theft from shops.

According to the figures, in the last year there have been in excess of 6,000 reported incidents of shoplifting throughout Leeds, a rise of 12 percent from 2012 / 2013’s figures.

The figures, along with revealing that there has been an increase in reported shoplifting offences within Leeds, have also revealed that half of the ten hotspots for such crime were supermarkets; although it has been reported that community convenience stores are also beginning to see a rise in shoplifting offences.

Following the release of the latest figures, the Chief Superintendent for Leeds Police has stated that he is of the belief that the financial hardship experienced by many, is causing some previously law-abiding citizens to desperation – and shoplifting.
