A report published towards the end of last week by MPs and peers in relation to the current youth justice system, has suggested that mandatory training for criminal lawyers working with children should be introduced “without delay”.
The report has suggested that at present there is a lack of specialist professionals; whilst it has also been suggested that many working within the sector are insufficiently trained to recognise young offenders’ needs.
Further concerns raised within the report include concerns that many lack knowledge specific by young defendants and youth court law.
The report was published on the same day as Lord Carlile suggested that children who appear within a court facing charges are “being left to flounder” due to not understanding what is going on.
