Since I first wrote about Donna Ockenden’s review into maternity care at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust on 24 July 2020 the total number of cases under investigation is now up to 1862.

The independent review into maternity care at the NHS Trust was initially launched in 2017. At the time, Donna Ockenden was asked to look into just 23 cases involving injuries and deaths of babies and mothers during childbirth. Since then, the number of cases being investigated by her team has risen dramatically as more families have come forward to report concerns about the care they received.

In June 2020 it was announced that West Mercia Police were conducting a police investigation to assess whether there is evidence to support a criminal case against the NHS Trust.

Why pursue a medical negligence claim?

The NHS and their staff have worked heroically in their fight against coronavirus for many months and have been rightly applauded for their hard work, dedication and courage.

Like all organisations the NHS does, however, need to reflect upon and learn from mistakes in the care and service that they provide. The ongoing investigation into the maternity care at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Foundation Trust underlines this. A full investigation is essential to find out what has happened and to make sure patients who were injured are compensated and lessons are leant.
